Understanding the Different Parts of the Cannabis Plant

Cannabis is very similar to other plants in many ways. Just like other plants, it starts the growth cycle from a seed, grows larger, and matures before flowering and repeating the cycle.

Understanding how to make the most out of your cannabis plants means learning about the parts of the cannabis plant.

Parts of the Cannabis Plant

Flower

The flowers are the part of the cannabis plant that contains CBD and terpenes. Without the flowers, you wouldn’t get high. Flowers have plenty of unique benefits that interact with the human endocannabinoid system. It is important to understand that flowers will only grow on female plants. Flowers are what you eventually dry out and smoke.

Cola

The cluster of buds that grows closely together is known as the cola. Colas are often found around the low branches, though the main cola typically sits at the top of the cannabis plant.

PIstil

The pistil is the spot where the flower’s reproductive parts sit. In this pistil you will find a ton of thin strands, very similar to hair. These strands are called stigmas. The stigmas are used to collect male plant pollen. While the stigmas are white when the plants are young, they eventually turn a yellow color as the weed plants gets older.

Bracts

The bracts are found in the female reproductive system. Bracts have a unique tear shape and are green. On the bracts, you will find several resin glands, which are made to hold the greatest number of cannabinoids found in the plant.

Calyx

Inside the bracts, you will find the calyx. The calyx is a unique see-thrugh part of the plant that is there to act as a protective layer for the ovule. You need some sort of magnifying device to see the calyx, as it is too small to see with the naked human eye.

Trichome

While trichomes might be small, they should not be underestimated. In fact, trichomes are one of the most essential parts of the marijuana plant anatomy. In fact, those small crystals that you see covering the buds on a cannabis plant are the trichomes.

Trichoes are only found on female plants and originate from the glands of the leaves, stems and calyx.

Stem

You probably already know this one, but the stem of the of the cannabis plant is the part of it that provides stability and structure. You can cut the top of the stem off, encouraging the plant to grow more buds and branches.
