Trying to determine how much light your weed clones need can be a bit confusing, especially if you are new to the growing process. To help make sure that your weed clones stay healthy and happy throughout the growth process, we’ve got all the information you need when it comes to lighting.
When growing freshly cut clones, you don’t need to give them anything more than ambient light. Never put freshly cut clones underneath direct light. When you start to see the roots appear, then it is a good time to start giving your clones a bit more light.
As your clones begin to grow, you can begin giving them full light with all of your other plants in your growth. When it comes to creating a light cycle for your clones, we recommend doing 18 hours on and 6 hours off.
Do note that if the leaves on your clone ever turn yellow, that means they are likely too close to the light. If kept there for too long, they will eventually get crispy and die. Whenever an un-rooted clone gets additional light, the leaves on the clone will try to photosynthesize. However, because they are not rooted, they will not be able to take in any nutrients. The leaves will be forced to cannibalize themselves, turning a dark yellow color.
The leaves will also begin cupping to try and retain moisture. If you notice that some of the leaves are starting to yellow, it is usually best to toss the clone that isn’t in good health. When your clone is stalled, it might take it a couple of weeks before it is able to recover and enter the rapid growth cycle.
The last thing you want is to use lights that are too strong for your clones. We highly recommend going with T5 and CFL grow lights, as they provide the blue spectrum that your plants need without the unnecessary intensity. With these types of lights, you can hang them close to your plants without worrying about damaging them.
An HID light, on the other hand, will likely overheat your plants if you’re not careful. If you want to go the route of LEDs, make sure to keep in mind the intensity of the lights that you choose. LEDs are very popular because of their efficiency. Plus, compared to many other types of lights out there, they are extremely effective.
